Have a Nice Day vs. Make it a Great Day!

March 1st, 2010 by Christopher

What does “have a nice day” really mean? I think the way most people use it, it means I wish you well today.

Is “having a nice day” something that just happens to you randomly? It really isn’t anything more than hoping that the day works out for someone?

Coming from a service worker, does it ring with sincerity? Unless it comes at the end of a genuine interaction, (talking, connecting, eye contact, smiling, etc.)  it’s more often just something people say just to say something as opposed to “bye”, or “bye now”, or “see you later.”  Like people will often ask you “how are you doing?” just to say something, but don’t want to hear the answer if it’s anything but “I’m fine.”

There’s also the sarcasm factor. We’ve all heard it used as a (knife twisting) dig at the end of an unpleasant interaction. How about “have a nice life?” There can be a real “ouch” factor to that one as well.

Maybe a more accurate way of putting it would be “I hope good things happen to you today.” Certainly more sincere but that still leaves a lot to chance (randomness, fate, destiny). Besides, it’s clunky.

What if you empower the other person with “Make it a Great Day!” You’re telling the other person, “hey, you’re in charge,” it’s you and your attitude that will determine the outcome. You get to make it good or perceive it as good no matter actually happens on the physical level.  You’re still wishing them well by implying that they deserve a great day.

Chances are good that if you’re determined to make your day great (or do your level best to see it that way), the people around you will notice and get a lift, too.

“Make it a great day” is at the end of my voicemail greeting. I hope it helps those who missed talking with me.

small adjustment: Close with “make it a great day” instead of “have a nice day.” How are people reacting to that? I’d love to hear from you…

Note: I first came across this idea many years ago when I attended a talk from Joel Weldon – an outstanding motivational speaker.

  1. Chris,
You clearly convey that thinking positive has positive results. I appreciate that you “walk the talk” and that people will always remember how you made them “feel” and we should treat our customers and employees with that in mind. You exude the “people wisdom” that corporate executives and people need to hear.

  2. Jerry,

I appreciate the comment. I couldn’t agree more that at the end of the day it’s all about the “vibe” we’re putting out. Thanks again…

    Chris
